I've read that the GoPro suction cup can have difficulty staying on in cold weather. I'll be driving around Switzerland in a few days, and I'm wondering if I'll have any issues putting it on the exterior of my rental car. It won't be too cold in the day (highs ranging from 30F to 50F), but driving at speed on the highway and/or at night will certainly cool it down.
Should I be worried about my suction cup falling off? Also, the part of me that doesn't want to risk losing my $500 camera, no matter how small the chance, thinks I should try and rig some sort of emergency tether. Any thoughts on how to do this? I was thinking maybe tie something around the camera, and then tie that to the grab handle above the door.
Any advice appreciated.

I've had mine stay firmly planted during winter rallies, but a tether is a good idea just the same. I'd do it just like you said, secure it to the grab handle.

Where will you be putting it? I had to put mine on my warm hood to keep it on.

The biggest problem with suction cups is that the suction generated will change as the temperature changes. If you put the suction cup on when it is cold and it gets warmer the air in the suction cup will expand reducing the suction force. I've had my TomTom fall off the windshield when it gets warm and sunny after putting it on in the dark, freezing morning.
If you put the suction cup on in the middle of the day when things are warm it should do a better job of staying stuck. The tether idea is a pretty good one just to make sure if the suction cup falls off you don't lose the camera.

I've had the same experience with a GPS on the windshield, which is the main reason I was worried about this. The camera is attached to the suction cup in an extremely secure fashion (think nuts and bolts), so as long as I can keep the assembly from falling onto the road I should I be fine.

Haven't determined that yet. I have a set of camera angles I like to use, but I've never dealt with the cold weather like this before. Keeping it on the hood is a good idea, although I might just put it on the inside of the windshield to avoid the risk of loosing the camera.

Excellent. Now I just have to think of something to tie it with…
